Purpose of both types of television is same – that is to watch. For the same purpose, technology they use is different. Along with technology used, there are differences in design, functions, and price. Now let’s move to comparison between these two types of television. I’ll try describing everything in layman’s language rather than in scientific language.

Larger screen options are available in Plasma TV. In general, size of plasma TV ranges from 37 inch (Diagonal) to 103 inch (Diagonal) whereas for LCD TV, it ranges from 26 inch (Diagonal) to 73 inch (Diagonal). Since most popular size ranges from 39 inch to 50 inch, both Plasma and LCD will be available for general TV buyer.

Contrast Ratio
Contrast ratio means difference between highest brightness and lowest darkness of a TV. More contrast ratio results in distinct picture display. Contrast ratio for Plasma TV is more than that of LCD TV.

Color Quality
Plasma TV has comparatively higher color quality because it is capable of displaying almost an accurate color. Plasma TV can display colors as it is whereas LCD TVs can’t display colors as accurately as Plasma TVs.

Heat Generation
Plasma TV generates more heat than LCD TV which is its drawback. Make sure you have AC facility to cool your room heated by Plasma TV.

Brightness
Plasma has less brightness in compare to LCD. LCD TVs have capability to light more brightly than a Plasma TV.

Life Span
When it comes to TV, its life span is most important. TV is a device that’s going to stay with you for longer period. Plasma TV has comparatively less life than LCD TV. According to recent data, if you watch your Plasma TV for 6 years at the rate of 10 hours every day, you’ll need to change your TV. So if you want your TV to last long, go for a LCD TV.

Weight
Though weight doesn’t matter much in quality, Plasma TVs are heavier than LCD TVs. So if you want to have light television set, buy LCD TV otherwise go for Plasma TV.

Technology for both these televisions is upgrading everyday resulting in higher and more stable performance. We can expect better quality tomorrow than today so you may wait few more time before upgrading your TV set because some recently launched (not widely available) televisions have most advanced functions and online features to watch online televisions and YouTube videos. Some televisions also are capable to update you with latest online information.
